18” x 24”

Acrylic on canvas

Castle ruins fascinate me in all their eerie beauty. They remind me of the rise and fall of empires; of cycles, and the struggle for freedom. Even in ruins, architecture tells stories.

This scene was inspired by Ballybunion Castle in County Kerry, Ireland, originally built in the 1400s. Over many long centuries, the fortress weathered conquests, storms, and lightening strikes. Now, all that is left are remnants of the east-southeast wall and a spiral staircase.

Those who built it are long gone, and so are those who invaded, claimed, and destroyed it in retaliation for resistance. Empires are neither eternal nor necessary. They, like the people and histories they try to erase, eventually fade and crumble to dust.
